Ancient Paths Seminars

This is what the Lord says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it." (Jeremiah 6:16)

In September of 2002, I was asked: "Have you ever attended an Ancient Paths Seminar?" I hadn't, so I asked the person, Have you?" She said no, but had heard that it was really good and felt that I should go. I'm the kind of person who is willing to try almost anything once, so I found out where an Ancient Paths Seminar was being held and signed up.

Many of us have been to enough seminars to know that one seminar isn't much different from another. You usually learn some interesting stuff at a seminar. You might even get a bit fired up for a few days afterwards, but in a short space of time everything goes back to normal. It didn't take me long to discover that an Ancient Paths Seminar was different from any other seminar I had ever attended. The teaching was excellent, but so was the teaching at many other seminars. The difference showed up went we split up into our small groups. First, we were told that our participation in the group was optional. If we didn't want to share anything, or say anything, there would be no pressure.

However, it was what we were told about the small group that really set it apart. We were told that it was not a discussion group, so there would be no discussion of the teaching. Every small group I had ever been in was basically a discussion group. We were also told that the small group was not counselling. Rather, it was a work of the Holy Spirit. Two things happened in those small groups that weekend. One was that the Holy Spirit stirred up in me some stuff that needed to change – and change it did over the following weeks and months.

The other thing was an unusual experience. One woman in my small group, when she heard that I was from Kingston, said she had lived in Gananoque when she was small. When I asked where, she said it was so long ago that she didn't know how to describe where it was, but that it was on Taylor Road. I replied that I knew Taylor Road and that I once owned a farm there. She described what she remembered and I thought I knew about where she had lived. Later, in the small group the facilitator asked me if I would prayer for this woman because I was an ordained minister. I didn't respond, so the facilitator asked me a second time. As I started to pray, I began to describe what I thought might have been the farm on which she was raised. In prayer I took her on a walk to the back of the farm:- along the farm lane lined with huge black spruce, through a clearing in the woods, and down the hill, across a bridge over the stream… Suddenly the woman cried out: "You really did know where I was raised. That bridge over the creek was where I use to go with my dog when I wanted to be alone and felt that no one cared about me!" Later she said: "I find it hard to believe that God would bring someone 100 miles who could describe exactly the place where I was raised." Through this the Lord brought healing to some painful events from her past.

After that experience, I knew that I wanted to bring this extraordinary seminar to Barnabas House. In January 2003, members and friends of Barnabas House experienced their first Ancient Paths Seminar. In February, Susan and I started facilitating seminars. Five or six seminars later, I was ready to take Coordinator Training. By that fall I was a coordinator with Family Foundations International.
